Research and Discoveries

Ultimately, improving patient care depends on the utilization of research discoveries in diagnostic and therapeutic applications at the bedside. This requires modern facilities to accommodate that research and hospitals that can translate discoveries into new treatments and cures for the benefit of our patients.

The Stanford University School of Medicine was awarded two Nobel Prizes in 2006, and is home to many breakthroughs, including the first kidney transplant, the first adult human heart transplant in the United States, and the first successful combined heart and lung transplant.

Our Medical Center provides talented researchers a clinical environment in which to study the translation of breakthrough research into effective patient care.

The ability to bring advances in medicine from the lab to the patient – from “bench to bedside” – is an important role for the Medical Center. It means that patients benefit from the latest in healthcare, and that healthcare benefits from the best in patient feedback. Bridging the gap between the lab bench and the patient bedside is one way Stanford Medical Center works to advance the field of medicine and provides the best in new treatments and cures for our patients.
